Finasteride has two distinct uses at different doses: 5mg daily shrinks an enlarged prostate (BPH), and 1mg daily slows male pattern hair loss and can regrow hair. It blocks the conversion of testosterone to DHT, the hormone responsible for both prostate growth and hair follicle miniaturisation. Takes 3-6 months for either indication.
