In brief…

Permethrin 5% cream is the first-line treatment for scabies - a highly contagious skin infestation caused by the Sarcoptes scabiei mite. Applied all over the body and washed off after 8-12 hours, one or two applications usually eradicates the infestation. Also available at lower strength (1%) as a head lice treatment.

Varies by product. Emollients: all ages. Topical steroids: appropriate potency for age. Tacrolimus: from age 2. Retinoids: generally from age 12.
