In brief…

Lamotrigine is unique among mood stabilisers -- it's particularly effective at preventing bipolar depressive episodes rather than mania. It's well-tolerated, doesn't cause weight gain, and is safe in women of childbearing age (unlike valproate). The catch: it must be started very slowly to avoid a serious skin reaction.
