Sodium valproate is an effective mood stabiliser for bipolar disorder and one of the most important anti-epilepsy drugs. It's particularly good at preventing manic episodes. However, it carries serious risks in pregnancy and must not be used by women of childbearing potential unless strict conditions are met.
