The Mirena is the most commonly recommended coil: excellent contraception for up to 8 years, a first-line treatment for heavy periods, and it can be the progestogen part of HRT to protect the womb lining. It is fitted by a doctor at a face-to-face appointment, so it cannot be ordered online. Dr Ferhat Uddin, our women's health lead, will fit it.
