Carbimazole is the first-line treatment for hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid) in the UK, most commonly caused by Graves’ disease. It reduces the amount of thyroid hormone your gland produces, bringing levels back to normal. Treatment usually lasts 12-18 months, after which many patients achieve remission.
