Ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) is a naturally occurring bile acid used to dissolve cholesterol gallstones and to treat primary biliary cholangitis (PBC, a chronic liver disease). It’s the only medication that can dissolve gallstones without surgery, though it only works on certain types and takes months.
