Fit to fly after surgery or illness.

A fit to fly certificate confirming you have recovered enough to travel safely after an operation or a recent illness.

Fit to fly and travel

  • A doctor every time
  • Today, every day.

What does the appointment involve?

The doctor reviews your surgery or illness, checks your recovery, wound healing and any risk from the flight such as clots or pressure changes, and issues a certificate. For a plaster cast on a long-haul flight, the doctor advises whether it needs splitting to allow for swelling at altitude.

Is there anything else I should know?

As a general guide, most people are cleared from around 10 to 14 days after straightforward surgery, but it depends entirely on the procedure and your recovery. Bring your discharge summary or operation details.
