Guanfacine (Intuniv) is an alpha-2A adrenergic receptor agonist - a completely different class of medication from both stimulants and atomoxetine. It’s particularly useful for patients where hyperactivity and impulsivity are the dominant symptoms (rather than inattention), where co-existing tic disorders need treatment alongside ADHD, and where oppositional or emotional dysregulation features are prominent. It has a calming, focusing effect and can improve sleep.

Safety information

Driving & machinery

May affect ability to drive. Dizziness, drowsiness, and visual disturbances have been reported. Do not drive or operate machinery until you know how it affects you.

Age restriction

Methylphenidate/lisdexamfetamine: children 6 and over, and adults. Atomoxetine: children 6 and over, and adults. Guanfacine: children 6-17 (MR formulation). All must be initiated by a specialist in ADHD.

Storage

Store below 25°C in a dry place. Keep out of reach and sight of children. Do not use after the expiry date.
