Immediate-release (IR) methylphenidate is the original ADHD medication - fast-acting, short-duration, and still useful today. A single dose lasts 3-4 hours, meaning it needs to be taken 2-3 times daily. While most patients now use long-acting formulations for convenience, IR methylphenidate remains valuable for dose-finding during titration, as a ‘top-up’ alongside a long-acting preparation, and for patients who need flexible, on-demand coverage.

Age restriction

Methylphenidate/lisdexamfetamine: children 6 and over, and adults. Atomoxetine: children 6 and over, and adults. Guanfacine: children 6-17 (MR formulation). All must be initiated by a specialist in ADHD.

Storage

Store below 25°C in a dry place. Keep out of reach and sight of children. Do not use after the expiry date.
