In brief…

Emergency contraception (‘morning-after pill’) prevents pregnancy after unprotected sex or contraceptive failure. Two options: levonorgestrel (effective up to 72 hours) and ulipristal acetate (EllaOne, effective up to 120 hours). Both work best when taken as soon as possible. Available from pharmacies without a prescription.
