Aciclovir is the first-line antiviral for herpes simplex virus (cold sores, genital herpes) and varicella-zoster virus (chickenpox, shingles). It’s most effective when started early - within 72 hours of symptom onset for shingles, and at the first tingle for cold sores. Also available as cream for cold sores.
