In brief…

Betamethasone valerate (Betnovate) is a potent topical corticosteroid used when milder steroids can’t control eczema or other inflammatory skin conditions. Available in cream, ointment, lotion and scalp application. Betnovate RD (0.025%) is a moderate-strength option for less severe areas.

Varies by product. Emollients: all ages. Topical steroids: appropriate potency for age. Tacrolimus: from age 2. Retinoids: generally from age 12.
