In brief…

Famotidine is an H2 receptor antagonist - it reduces stomach acid through a different, less powerful mechanism than PPIs. It’s a good option for mild-to-moderate heartburn, for people who want to avoid long-term PPI use, or as a step-down from PPIs. Works faster than PPIs (within an hour) but provides less sustained acid suppression.
