Lactulose is an osmotic laxative that’s been used for decades. It’s a synthetic sugar that draws water into the bowel and is fermented by gut bacteria, producing acids that stimulate bowel movement. It’s particularly popular for children and in pregnancy. Also has a specific role in liver disease.
