In brief…

Valaciclovir is the prodrug of aciclovir - it’s converted to aciclovir in the body but has much better oral absorption, meaning fewer tablets per day. For genital herpes, it’s twice daily instead of five times daily. For shingles, three times daily instead of five. Same effectiveness, much better convenience.
