In brief…

Venlafaxine is an SNRI -- it works on both serotonin and noradrenaline, giving it a broader mechanism than SSRIs alone. It's often the next step when SSRIs haven't been effective enough, and has strong evidence for both depression and anxiety disorders. The modified-release version is better tolerated.
