In brief…

Amitriptyline was originally developed as an antidepressant, but at low doses it's become one of the most effective treatments for nerve pain (neuropathic pain). At 10--50mg, taken at bedtime, it dampens pain signals and often helps with sleep too. It's not being used as an antidepressant at these doses.
